Improved internal architecture for public lighting

Overview

The cost of light has dropped immensely with the introduction of white LED lighting.

Public lighting was historically a substantial expense due to the low efficiency and short life of previous technologies.  Bulb replacement was the main maintenance cost, with occasional ballast failures,  As a result, lighting fixtures were designed for easy bulb replacement.  Replacing a ballast was often not worth the effort, and the entire lighting fixture was simply replaced.

The introduction of LED technology into public and municipal lighting has changed the economics of light.  LED lighting elements rarely fail and the most common cause of failure is the electronic “driver” supplying current to the LED lighting element.

This patent describes an improved architecture, reducing the maintenance burden in a typical fleet of public or municipal  lighting fixtures.
